Recently, Getty Storm was diagnosed with a genetic condition called Spinal Muscle Atrophy (SMA1.) Getty just turned 5 months old and having this condition will give her approximately two years to live. Such a sad outcome for new parents who thought they were just going in for a routine four month check up! Since there is no cure for this condition, and it is considered terminal, their health insurance is VERY selective about what they will and won't pay for. Most of the items that will help Getty be more comfortable down the road are not covered, putting the family in a terrible financial situation. This craft fair will help raise funds for Getty!

Um, OMG.

Totoro is the "keeper of the forest" in a Hayao Miyazaki film called My Neighbor Totoro. He is big and fat and oh-so-cuddly, by far one of my favorite Miyazaki characters. So stumbling across a tutorial to make Totoro cream puffs from AnatheRed's blog made me smile :) How freakin' cute is this?! I'm sure many of my friends can tell you that I am not a baker by any means, but seeing these Totoro cream puffs makes me wish that I really could bake!

Fall '08 Indie Mart was super fun :) It was Fat Ninja's first time to debut anything but origami cards - we were selling decoupaged coasters, origami glass rings, fabric pocket tissue holders and fabric + felt hair clips! It was full of super good times - especially since we had special Fat Ninja clan members present: Steph, Will and Henry!

Fat Ninja will be participating in yet another Mission Indie Mart craft fair in SF!

Check out the party that won Best of the Bay for “Best Nomadic Hipster Boutique and Party” and rocked the Treasure Island Music Festival. We are back…bigger, better and more bad ass than ever on Sunday October 12th from 12-6pm at Thee Parkside. Once again bringing you the best in design, vintage, quirky handmade and independent everything…music, food, bakers, bands. Oh yeah and dont forget the best party in town- cheap beers, stiff drinks, killer BBQ food and a drunken MC with a bullhorn rowdying up the crowd.
Bands all day long inside and DJ’s all day outside. As of now our band line up includes: French Cassette, The Pleasure Kills, Nervous Ticks, The Bruises and Les Hormone. Check out the Magnificent 7, Primo and the Drunk Dial DJ’s spinning all day. Updates added weekly!

Spare the air & take the 22 Fillmore bus right there or ride your bike! Plenty of parking and valet bike parking all day long! Bring your friends, come on out and shop, drink, hang out and eat. As well Thee Parkside’s Twang Sunday will be going on in the evening.

Still no Cable

Sooo... having no cable - meaning no television or the internets - totally does not rock our world.

I may be developing a serious case of Bravo/Animal Planet/Cartoon Network withdrawals (yes, I still watch cartoons!). To fill the void, all Romeo and I have been doing has been playing our XBOX 360 and watching some DVDs over and over again -

Romeo enters bedroom. Judieann is on the bed watching a movie. Romeo looks at the television and sees "The Mummy" playing.

Romeo: I've seen this movie three times in the past two days!

Judieann shrugs.

Ah, yes - tis our life with no cable. Yes, there are plenty of other things we can and still do (such as crafting, duh!), but the television is our ever-so-constant companion in the background. How we miss it.... But enough pining! We should be getting back in touch with the world wide web this weekend, so hopefully the Fat Ninja Etsy shop will be back up and running!

Life has been busy here and will soon get busier since the Fat Ninja clan will be moving (still in the Bay Area)! Some of the goings ons has been trying to get some new products ready to post up in our Etsy shop - we will be incorporating decoupaging! Yay to decoupaging! Anywho, here are a few things we've been working on:

More coasters with oriental-inspired textured paper, and glass tiles decoupaged with origami paper (which we will turn into magnets). Hopefully these will be ready to go into the Fat Ninja shop soon!

So the Fat Ninja clan had a great time at the SF Indie Mart this past weekend with Late Nite Foodie! We got a sweet spot inside - next to the bar and sheltered from the foggy and windy SF weather :)

This was the first craft show for Fat Ninja and it was wicked fun and we sold a good amount of cards! Yay!

I would have taken more pictures - but the camera died after I took a few pictures :( D'oh!

Indie Mart Street Fair in SF

Decoupage Fun

I have been decoupaging everything I can get my hands on lately. I decided to decoupage some metal coasters for myself since I keep leaving nasty cup rings on my desk. I used some floral origami that I really liked.

Then my friend, Will, saw my coasters and asked me to make some as a birthday gift for his friend (yay, Fat Ninja order!). I used red and green/blue Asian inspired textured paper. I think using textured paper is a bit better than the paper origami since its a bit thicker.

Last, but not least, I decoupaged a wooden clock! Again, I used textured paper - this time of a Japanese geisha girl :)

Back from Mexico!

The Fat Ninja clan is back from Tulum, Mexico! While we were there we got to explore Mayan ruins, climb a 138 foot pyramid, read in a comfy hammock right outside our beach front cabana, and see lots of neat local handcrafts.

This handcrafted angel hung in our cabana. The beach we stayed at is a nesting beach for sea turtles, so that is perhaps why our angel was holding a turtle. What I liked a lot about this statuette is that it has red/orange spots all over it - just like I did after a bad skin reaction to some sunscreen + sun during our trip! Yikes! They also had some pretty cool ornately decorated masks, but I forgot to take pics of them :(

Handcrafted jewelry and hammocks abounded in Tulum, but what I decided to bring back home were a few recreated Jose Guadalupe Posada illustrations that were hand painted on bark paper.

My favorite of the illustrations was "La Calavera Catrina":

La Calavera Catrina (the skeleton of the fashionable lady) is the creation of Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913). Posada was a Mexican engraver known for his illustrations of newspapers during the times of dictator Porfirio Diaz. Originally he created La Catrina to illustrate the popular song "La cucaracha". Later he used this image to parody overdressed Mexican ladies, that at the time, had an obsession for everything French.

I also purchased illustrations of (above, left to right) "Catrin" and "El Entierro." I knew my brother would totally love the "Catrin" illustrations - he has an affinity for skeletons, top hats and cigars. Mexico was fun, but we sure are glad to be back home - and crafting!

Decoupage Attempt!

So I tried my hand at decoupage and this is what happened.

Using the green paper was a bad idea with a layer of anything white over it since it turned the glue a slight shade of green. So now the white lines in the tree trunk at the top and middle sections are tinted green. I also used several layers of matte Mod Podge then finished it off with the gloss Mod Podge - not sure if I like it shiny. But not too bad for a first attempt!

Edward Robert Smitherhands?!

So I found another fabulous artist on Etsy - Karen Watkins! I lover her prints! Especially her Edward Scissorhands Print!

Reasons:

I love Johnny Depp.
Scissor hands, like, totally rock.
It reminds me of Robert Smith of The Cure - and uh, I LOVE The Cure and Robert Smith.

Oh - and her movie prints are all on sale til today! Woohoo! Happy Birthday, Karen!

Robotic Love

I was fiddling around with some felt and thread the other day which yielded this Robot Love Softie/Pin Cushion.

I just used a blanket stitch to sew all the pieces together, stuffed it with some fiber fill and attached the metal grips of binder clips to make the "ears."

Robots are awesome :)

I made this for my boyfriend, Romeo (yup, that really is his name!), as a gift one day when we were still kicking around the idea of a Fat Ninja shop... and well, we owe it all to this little guy.

What an inspiration - so round, so fat :)

The much anticipated (well, ok - maybe only be me!) Fat Ninja shop is now open!
